sky{e}scapes

there are four of us so far contributing on a daily basis.
ontario {ca}, melbourne {au}, seattle {us} and most recently nottingham {uk}.
it began as pictures of the sun and now includes the sky in general in this five-way dialogue.
a cyber thread branching out latterally to each of the three others and then vertically to the sky itself.
we include notes along with the images.
a line or two.
sometimes just a word.
other times a full update or tangent.
yet this simple act of existential and artistic exploration has become a daily delight.
and has shifted the way i travel under the sky.

here and here are the links to the full facebook albums assembled so far.

and this one of the more substantial pieces of writing i have sent them:

okay, so i've been thinking a lot about how we influence each other since i saw this set of images, marcus.

after having a three way dialogue between cam, sahra and myself for so long, i got used to a certain visual vocabulary. and the thing is i wasn't even aware of how much i saw this series of images as existing within certain boundaries (and not in a bad way at all...i'm glad we have our distinct voices that speak with certain words). i was just unaware until you hop in and send this set of images that i would have known were yours just by looking at them. and not just because they are distinctly not ours (and that's 'ours' in the old sense of the word. you are part of the party now and i'm happy you're here).

anyway, what fascinates me a lot is your use of the sky line. i mean, cameron has his tree filigree and smokey skies, sahra, her birds and clear summery skies, me my wide open cloud and fogscapes. and you add these graphic and weighty horizons. they are dark and silhouetted. angular. tangible and lurking about at the bottom of the frame. and there is a particular kind of line here that i can't quite name, but it's distinctly yours.

and then on the other hand you throw in houses and fences and architecture left and right so the sun has to work it's way through things to get to the viewer. it's one step further than what cameron does with his trees. he uses them more as a filter rather than an obstruction for the sun to travel through. fascinating difference.

the very first images you sent had these elements in them already (see attached), i just recognized them as part of your voice upon seeing more. and the funny this is, i took this image (also attached) on friday morning before i got the big update and yet had already started playing with your silhouetted horizon line. i remember taking the attached image and thinking: this is a new one for you, nat. but i didn't realize i was using your 'words' until i saw more of them in this new set.

i'm just fascinated by this because i haven't collaborated much with other visual artists before so i'm not used to this kind of dialogue that happens. i feel like a kid at the candy store. it's a delight finding another way people/artists across 4 countries and 3 continents who have never met are able to exchange things and connect at a preverbal level.
